Problem
My client's internal inspection team was struggling with manual field reporting. They used a mix of fragmented tools to capture data, write notes, and take photos.
This led to inconsistent documentation and hours of manual compilation back at the office. It was slow and messy.
The inspectors had no mobile-optimized way to log data on-site.
Constraints
The application had to work reliably on mobile devices in the field.
We had to handle a high volume of heavy image uploads on-site without slowing down the database.
The system also had to generate clean, print-ready PDF reports directly from the captured data.
Approach
I built the entire front-end and back-end using Next.js and PostgreSQL.
For data entry, I designed a mobile-first responsive UI with React-Bootstrap. I integrated the native browser camera API so inspectors could take photos directly inside the app.
I used Prisma to optimize database queries and routed all image uploads directly to DigitalOcean Spaces.
To handle the reporting, I wrote a custom engine that automatically compiles database entries and images into structured PDF reports.
Outcomes
The app is now in active production and is used daily by the client's field inspection team.
We completely eliminated the manual compilation process, reducing report generation time from hours to a single click.
The client replaced three fragmented tools with this single platform.
Data accuracy and completeness improved because inspectors now log everything directly on-site.
